What Is Safe Passage?

The Safe Passage program supports students as they travel to and from school and in the community. Safe Passage programming includes conflict resolution, mediation services, and community relationship building to keep students safe and improve student attendance. Safe Passage Ambassadors – trained and trusted adults from community-based organizations – are assigned to schools and work to build relationships with school staff, students, families, and community members. You can spot Ambassadors in our community wearing the Safe Passage green vest!

Program Management

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (DMPSJ) is responsible for the day-to-day management of the District’s Safe Passage program. DMPSJ works closely with the Deputy Mayor for Education, other District agencies, and community partners to ensure our youth can travel to and from school safely.
